Mount Etna Volcano and Taormina

Duration: 7 hours

Experience the thrill of visiting Europe’s largest active volcano, set in the heart of the incredible Sicilian countryside. This trip starts with a scenic drive on a road that winds around the slopes of the mountain, passing the villages of Santa Venerina and Zafferana. The volcanic soils of the region are hugely fertile and you’ll pass vineyards and orchards of chestnuts and hazelnuts. The road is cut through solidified lava streams, hard black rivers that once flowed from the top of the mountain but are now cold. You ‘ll see evidence of some of the more recent eruptions.

You’ll be taken to the Crater Silvstri, over 6,000 feet above sea level. The views across Sicily and the coast are incredible and you’ll be able to gaze out far into the Catania Gulf. Once you’ve taken in the views the trip continues in a four-wheel drive vehicle or by cable car. You will be taken close to the last crater to be opened up and then for a panoramic walk to see areas of volcanic activity. Etna’s volcanic landscape is starkly beautiful and this is a trip you won’t forget.

After lunch (not included) , we will continue to visit Taormina, has a reputation for being one of the most charming places on the entire island and when you arrive you’ll soon find out why. Your guide will take on a walking tour which includes views of the Cathedral and then a visit of the Greek theater, which is perhaps the most famous archaeological monument on Sicily. Despite its name it was probably built by the Romans, who constructed it from brick. It is remarkably preserved and is still in use today. Its location is also remarkable, offering incredible views of the coast and Mount Etna.

From here you’ll be taken to the elegant Corso Umberto I, the primary shopping street set in a network of small lanes. Enjoy the displays of handmade jewelry and pottery and browse the fashion stores. This small medieval town with is packed with palaces, squares and alleyways, giving you plenty to see and photograph before your return trip.
